It feels like no time at all since I met Patty and Jodie to photograph their Domestic Partnership, and the whole session felt like catching up with old friends rather than working a job. Patty came prepared with props, including a wedding veil that's been passed down through her family for over a hundred years, worn and photographed by generations before her. Getting to be part of that lineage, even briefly, is exactly why I got into photography in the first place. Midway through, things turned considerably less sentimental: I spotted something swimming toward us in the Hudson River and, having grown up in North Carolina, assumed it was a snake with violent intentions. It was, in fact, an extremely unbothered river otter. Moments later Patty spotted a bald eagle overhead, and we all stood there doing our best (worst, in my case) David Attenborough impressions as it soared past.
