Everything you're probably wondering about booking, planning, and what it's actually like to work together. Real answers, no fine print.
Session Day Expectations
What should we wear?
Whatever feels like you, that's the honest answer. I'll say more when we talk beforehand, but in general, solid colors and soft textures photograph better than busy patterns, and coordinating (not matching) as a family tends to look most natural.
What if it rains?
We'll figure out a rain plan together before your session, whether that's rescheduling or shifting to a covered or indoor spot. I'll keep an eye on the forecast as your date gets close and reach out if we need to talk options.
What's the best time of day for a session?
Early morning or a couple hours before sunset, hands down. That's when the light is softest and most flattering, and it's the window I'll usually recommend when we're picking your time.
My kids don't love having their photo taken. Will that be a problem?
Not at all, that's most kids. I'm not chasing forced smiles, I'm looking for the real moments, the giggle, the mid-run blur, the "just stop and be a kid" shot. Some of my favorite family images happened because a kid was having a normal kid day, not a posed one.
Booking & Logistics
How long is a session?
Sessions run 45 minutes ($425) or 90 minutes ($550), depending on how much ground you want to cover, family groups, multiple outfit changes, a couple locations. If you're not sure which length fits, just ask and I'll help you figure it out based on what you have in mind.
Do I need to put down a deposit?
Yes, a deposit holds your date and time. The remaining balance is due on or before session day.
How far in advance should I book?
Golden hour sessions (who wants to be up for sunrise photos?) and weekend slots fill up fastest, especially in spring and fall. I'd reach out 3-4 weeks ahead if you have a specific date in mind, though I'll always try to work with shorter notice when I can.
Where do sessions happen?
Anywhere across Rhinebeck, Beacon, Newburgh, Poughkeepsie, Kingston, Cold Spring, or New Paltz, wherever feels most like you. Riverside, a favorite backyard, downtown streets, a family farm, I'm happy to talk through location ideas together.
Can we add time or a second location during the session?
If we're running long or you want to add a spot, additional time is available at $125 per half hour, arranged ahead of time when possible so we can plan the timeline right. This of course depends on my schedule and what comes after your session.
Style & Deliverables
How would you describe your portrait style?
Natural light and documentary first. I'd rather capture how your family actually laughs and moves than direct you into a stiff, posed lineup. Expect genuine expressions over camera-ready smiles. When necessary, I'll bring a light but my goal is always to keep you the star of the show, not the lighting technique.
How many photos will I get, and when?
Your full edited gallery arrives within 2 weeks. Most 45-minute sessions land around 20-30 final images, 90-minute sessions closer to 40-60, depending on how many locations and looks we cover.
How do prints work?
Every gallery includes full print rights, so you're free to print anywhere, plus a print credit built into your session ($25 for 45 minutes, $50 for 90 minutes) if you'd like to order through my print shop directly.
