I'd known Lauren for years before this session, we ran in the same circle of friends on the Upper East Side, so I wasn't surprised when Tim called to book a portrait session. He and Lauren were relocating to Atlanta, and wanted photos together in their favorite New York spots before they left: Belvedere Castle and Conservatory Water in Central Park, and the Gael Pub on the Upper East Side for good measure.
What neither of us let on: this wasn't just a portrait session. A few days later I ran into the two of them walking back from the park, and Lauren was beaming in a way that gave it away immediately. Tim had proposed right there, mid-session, and I'd unknowingly been documenting their engagement the entire time. He'd planned the whole thing without either of us catching on.
Some of the best photos I've taken happened because nobody, including me, knew what was actually unfolding in front of the camera.
